Utilities and third party service providers can develop managed charging programs to reduce peak demand from transportation electrification and enable demand flexibility for integrating wind and solar resources. This reduces utility investments needed to maintain reliability and resilience for bulk power and distribution systems, helps keep electricity bills affordable for utility customers, and further enables beneficial electrification.
Berkeley Lab has launched a project with the U.S. Department of Energy, as part of its EVGrid Assist initiative, to develop a guide for conducting benefit-cost analysis specifically for utility programs for managed EV charging.The guide will serve as a technical resource for state regulators in formulating utility guidance for managed charging program filings and reviewing utility filings. Utilities will be able to use the guide to develop benefit-cost analyses for proposed managed charging programs. And the guide will help stakeholders provide input into development of cost-effective programs and review of utility filings.
