Decarbonizing buildings and industries requires both uninterrupted clean electricity and zero-emission heat. In a recent Joule article, Datas et al. show that latent-heat thermophotovoltaic thermal batteries offer a promising solution. Here, we discuss the remaining high-temperature materials and heat-transport challenges and the additional progress required.
