Scientists who study the world and develop new technologies have been confronting environmental issues for many years. Yet ironically as anthropogenic climate change is simulated and innovative alleviations thereof are explored, research facilities are some of the least sustainable infrastructures in the world. In this issue’s Viewpoint, a Staff Scientist of the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory discusses how much energy is expended by most laboratory-based, computational, and clean room dependent research. He then overviews how using energy efficient equipment and altering laboratory infrastructures can make more sustainable scientists while being cost-effective.
