This paper provides a practical comparison between Mixed Integer Linear Programming and Particle Swarm Optimization when applied to the Optimal Sizing and Placement of Distributed Generation in Microgrids. The two formulations are presented and the methods are applied to a planning problem of a real isolated microgrid in Alaska.
