This report considers the evolution of energy demand in developing countries of Asia. It describes historical changes in demand for commercial energy and the underlying causes of those changes, and considers future prospects for energy demand. Because of the general interest in oil, we highlight changes with respect to oil demand. We have aggregated data on energy demand and economic structure from ten countries to produce and Asian portrait, though we also describe changes by country. The ten Countries are Bangladesh, Chain (P.R.C), India, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Thailand. Together, these countries account for over 90 percent of Asian energy consumption. China, with 45 percent of the combined population of these countries, and a 61 percent share of the overall commercial energy consumption, dominates the regional picture when it is included.
